Product Overview

Germanium Silicon Lenses - Germanium's wide spectral range (2-16 µm) and impermeability in the visible spectrum make it well suited for infrared laser applications. It also does not react easily with air, water, alkalis, and acids (except nitric acid). Silicon offers the advantage of low cost and low density, making it a widely used NIR material for applications in the 1.2 to 7 µm region. Silicon's low density (half that of germanium or zinc selenide) makes it ideal for weight-sensitive applications, especially those in the 3-5 µm range. Its density is 2.33 g/cm³ and its Knoop hardness is 1150.
