Q How to calculate the exposure time with ND filter?

Let’s assume N = stop figure, T = original exposure time without filter, T2 = exposure time with filter.

The relation is T2 = 1/2n x T.

Eg, N=3, T=1/20, then T2 = 1/23 x 1/20 = 1/160.

Q What's the relation between stop, optical density and transmittance?

The corresponding relation is as below in the table:

What's the relation between stop, optical density and transmittance?

Q How to choose a filter correctly?

Talking about the most frequently used filters here: UV, CPL, ND, GND, Starlight, Black Mist and white Mist.

Firstly, all filters should be with AF (anti-fingerprint) coating which makes it is easily cleaned, anti-scratch at some extent, so much more durable than the ones without AF coating.

UV Filter

  • Function: block UV light, protect lens from scratch, dropping, water and dirt.
  • Performance requirements: high transmittance over 98%, HD optical glass with AR (anti-reflection) coating, without flare.
  • Application: open-air, such as Seaside, desert, plateau, mountainous area, snowfield, etc.

CPL Filter

  • Function:
    • Eliminate reflections on non-metallic surfaces (such as water, glass, and leaves);
    • Enhance color saturation (e.g., make the blue sky bluer, the vegetation greener);
    • Reduce screen glare and enhance contrast.
  • Performance requirements: high transmittance over 98%, HD optical glass with AR (anti-reflection) coating, without flare.
  • Application: Landscape photography (reflection on lake surface, blue sky and white clouds), still life photography (glassware), portrait photography (eliminating skin shine).
  • Notice: It will reduce the light intake by about 1-2 stops, requiring an increase in ISO or a slower shutter speed.

ND Filter /VND

  • Function: Reduce the amount of light entering the lens, allowing the use of a large aperture or slow shutter speed under strong light conditions.
  • Typical effects: shooting flowing water, moving clouds, and blurring crowds (dynamic blur).
  • Usage scenario: Long exposure during the day (such as waterfalls, train tracks, sea spray), video shooting (requires maintaining a fixed shutter speed).
  • Advantages: Multiple gear options (ND2/ND4/ND8, etc.), allowing flexible control over dimming intensity; does not affect color balance.
  • The difference between ND Filter and VND: ND stop is fixed, VND stops adjustable.

GND

  • Function: Balance the light ratio in high-contrast scenes (such as scenes with a large brightness difference between the sky and the ground); By gradually darkening the bright areas (such as the sky) through a gradient, while preserving the details of the dark areas (such as the ground scenery).
  • Usage scenario: Landscape photography (sunrise/sunset, snow mountains, grasslands), urban architecture (sky and architecture have a large light ratio).
  • Advantages: It is divided into hard gradient (with a clear boundary between light and dark) and soft gradient (with a natural transition), suitable for different scenarios;
  • Notice: Precise alignment with the horizon is required, and misalignment is prone to occur during handheld shooting; digital post-production can partially replace it (such as HDR), but using it in the early stages is more efficient.

Night Filter

  • Function: Filtering out yellow light of specific wavelengths and the color of the filter itself reduces the yellow light that interferes with night photography, making the night scene images cleaner.
  • Application: Night photography

Color Filter

  • Function:
    • Change the color tone of the picture (such as red, orange, blue, and other color filters);
    • Adjust the contrast of tones in black and white photography (such as using a yellow filter to darken the blue sky, or a red filter to highlight the red leaves);
    • Creative color adjustment to create a specific atmosphere (such as simulating a cool tone with a blue filter).
  • Application: Black and white photography, creative portrait, stage lighting color correction, simulated film tone.
  • Advantages: Direct color intervention, suitable for rapid creation in the early stage; precise tone control in black and white photography.
  • Notice: The color needs to be precisely selected based on the lighting and subject matter, and excessive use may lead to color distortion; digital post-production color grading is more flexible, and the use of filters is gradually decreasing.

Starlight Filter

  • Function:
    • Make point light sources (such as street lamps, the sun, and candlelight) produce a starburst effect (4/6/8 starbursts);
    • Enhance the dreamy feel and visual appeal of the image, especially suitable for night scenes or light spot scenes.
  • Application: City nights-cape, festive lighting, stage photography, and backlight portrait (hair highlights turn into starbursts).
  • Advantages: Unique effect, achieving starburst without post-production; low cost to achieve high visual impact.
  • Notice: It is only effective for point light sources, and the star effect may be overexposed under strong light; it tends to appear "exaggerated" in non-essential scenes, so it should be used with caution.

Black Pro-Mist Filter

  • Function:
    • Moderately soften the image, retain details and contrast, and reduce highlight glare;
    • Simulate the texture of film and enhance the "breathability" of the image, suitable for natural softening effects.
  • Application: Portrait photography (commercial, fashion, softening skin while retaining three-dimensional sense); Cinematic narrative shots, outdoor shooting under strong light conditions (such as midday backlight).
  • Advantages: Softens the natural look without reducing contrast, with rich details in the dark areas; compatible with various lighting conditions.

White Pro-Mist Filter

  • Function:
    • Strong softening effect, with obvious halation and atomization in the highlight area;
    • Reduce contrast, enhance the transparency of the image, and create a dreamy atmosphere.
  • Application: Portrait and wedding photography (backlighting to create hair halo); Fantasy themes, music videos, or romantic scenes (such as under misty or soft lighting).
  • Advantages: Outstanding dreamy effect, suitable for creative expression; enhances the atmosphere of light in low-light environments.
  • Notice: It may cause the image to appear grayish and prone to overexposure under strong light; excessive use can lead to loss of detail, so it is necessary to control the density (such as 1/4 stop).
