Cylindrical Lenses are ideal for one-dimensional magnification applications. Unlike spherical lenses that act symmetrically on incoming light in both directions, cylinder lenses act on incoming light in only one direction. Typical applications include shaping anamorphic beams with pairs of cylinder lenses, collimating and rounding laser diode outputs, and focusing diverging beams onto detector arrays.
To minimize spherical aberration, collimated sources should be directed from the curved face when focusing beams as lines, and line sources should be directed from the flat face when collimating line sources.
